SterileState

Farmington Hills, Michigan, United States, North America

Overview

Founded in 2013, SterileState has developed a polymer device that releases nitric oxide gas to sterilize medical equipment in roughly four hours, compared with the weeks required for traditional ethylene oxide processing. The company has tested the technology on more than 60 devices from nearly 40 manufacturers. SterileState is pursuing regulatory clearance from the FDA, but no approval timeline has been confirmed. The startup raised $10.8 million in a seed round (a Rule 506(b) offering) to commercialise the technology and is targeting $13 million total, with about $2.2 million remaining in the raise. The fundraise and product development occur against a backdrop of tighter EPA regulation of ethylene oxide, which currently sterilizes roughly half of U.S. medical devices.
