Overview

StockX operates an online marketplace for sneakers, apparel, electronics, collectibles and trading cards, letting customers either bid on items or buy at the displayed price. The company serves over 200 million visitors across 200 countries. For the year ended Dec. 31, 2020 it reported gross merchandise value of $1.8 billion, revenue of $400 million, and closed more than $7.5 million in trades. StockX said it hit profitability in the second half of last year. The Detroit-based company is reportedly preparing to go public as soon as later this year. After its latest financing the company was valued at more than $3.8 billion. StockX operates an online marketplace that began as a sneaker resale platform and has expanded into streetwear, luxury goods, collectibles and electronics, using a supply-and-demand pricing model and in-house authentication. Since launching in 2016, StockX has recorded 13 million transactions across 200 countries and surpassed $2.5 billion in lifetime gross merchandise value. The company averaged 25 million visitors per month during the most recent quarter, and 50% of transactions occurred within the last 12 months, reflecting rapid recent growth. International expansion is accelerating: Q3 2020 non-U.S. trades rose 260% over 2019, sell-side transactions in the Asia-Pacific region increased 500%, and Hong Kong activity rose 1,000%. StockX expanded its authentication footprint in 2020, opening facilities in Portland, Toronto and Hong Kong and increasing its global footprint by 50%, and opened a Tokyo office in 2019 with a localized experience in 2020. The company laid off about 100 people early in the COVID-19 shutdown but subsequently saw strong recovery and growth. StockX operates a "stock market of things" marketplace where consumers buy and sell across sneakers, watches, handbags, streetwear and collectibles. It provides real-time pricing with live bids and asks, timestamped transactions, market analysis, individual portfolio tracking, and historical sales and volume metrics. Products move through the company's authentication centers — StockX currently operates four centers in the U.S. and Europe and plans a fifth outpost outside Amsterdam. The company intends to diversify product categories, expand internationally with a focus on Europe and Asian markets, and extend its offline reach with brick-and-mortar locations. Founded in February 2016 and based in Detroit, the team includes more than 800 full- and part-time employees and serves customers in nearly 200 countries with millions of active users. StockX raised $110M in a Series C that values the company at over $1 billion. StockX operates an anonymous, transparent resale marketplace that began with sneakers and has expanded into streetwear, handbags and watches. The platform authenticates goods in person and matches buyers and sellers with market-driven pricing. The company reports more than $2M in daily transactions and 800,000 users have bought or sold on the platform; it is approaching a $1B run-rate. StockX employs roughly 300 people in Detroit and 50 in Tempe and has grown to about 415 employees in total. Future plans in the articles include international expansion with local currency and language support, additional product verticals, possible physical "in-real-life" stores or operations, and substantial hiring for engineering, customer service and C-suite roles. StockX operates a marketplace for limited-edition sneakers and authenticated goods, positioning itself as a “stock market of things” that uses a bid/ask market to match buyers and sellers. The platform displays real-time pricing data and lets users track a virtual portfolio of their sneaker collections as values fluctuate. Sellers ship items to StockX for verification before items are delivered to buyers. The company closed a $6M funding round and will use the proceeds to expand its sneaker business and enter new verticals such as watches and handbags. StockX also plans to enable users from foreign countries to begin selling on the platform, according to co-founder and CEO Josh Luber.
