Storybricks
San Diego, CA, United States
Overview
Storybricks pivoted from a consumer-facing browser MMO to a B2B focus, repurposing its core tech to build an AI engine that imbues online game characters with emotions. The company plans to license this engine to third-party game studios and is already working with a number of studios, including one potentially major client. The shift to B2B led to summer layoffs of 3D artists and animators as the team refocused. Storybricks says its technology removes the need for scripting characters and manages relationships between them to enable more sandbox-style, service-oriented games. The startup is London/San Francisco-based and claims it is close to being profitable. It raised external funding from angel investors to support the pivot.
