Strobe commercializes SproutCore, the open‑source framework created by founder Charles Jolley, to help developers build touch‑based, native‑feeling mobile apps using JavaScript and HTML5. The company teams Jolley with Rails and jQuery contributors Yehuda Katz and Carl Lerche and is focused on enabling HTML5 apps that can be wrapped in native code for distribution via app stores or the browser. Strobe is working with several large media companies as pilot customers and says it already has more customers than it can handle. The team numbered nine at the time of the article and was expected to expand to twelve by the end of January. Strobe plans to use its new funding to hire more developers and push toward a release of major new platform features in Q1 2011.
