Overview
StudentFinance is a European fintech that funds educational programs via income share agreements, partnering with providers such as Ironhack and Le Wagon to finance upskilling into software development, cybersecurity and AI. The company uses AI models to discover in-demand skills by monitoring job listings, salary data and market changes, and maps those needs to suitable education providers. It is developing machine learning models to forecast future job-market demand and predict income levels, and plans to invest in internal data and AI capabilities through strategic hires. Revenue comes from ISA repayments (interest tied to alumni earnings) and fees charged to course providers for each student start. The platform and financing are available in Spain, Portugal and the U.K., and it provides a SaaS offering to partners in Germany and Finland; StudentFinance plans to expand its full service into Germany after receiving BaFin clearance. With the new funding the company aims to support its lending capital, operational costs and hiring to scale its product and data capabilities. StudentFinance.com builds the technology and data infrastructure to enable education providers to offer Income Share Agreements (ISAs) as an income-based deferred payment option. Its platform targets a range of providers from boot camps and certificate programs to Masters degrees. Founded in 2019 and launched in early 2020 by Mariano Kostelec, Marta Palmeiro, Sergio Pereira and Miguel Santo Amaro, the company operates across several European countries including Spain, Germany and Finland. It works with established schools and upskilling platforms such as Ironhack and Le Wagon and employs a team of 16 people. The company secured $5.3M (€4.5M) in seed funding to support growth. StudentFinance plans to use the funds to expand into the UK later this year and to triple its headcount, hiring specialists in product, data, engineering, design, operations, HR, finance and legal. StudentFinance is a Spanish fintech founded in 2019 that offers Income Share Agreement (ISA) financing, covering students’ tuition and recouping repayment as a fixed percentage of income once graduates earn above minimum wage. The company partners with schools, bootcamps and universities and is building a technological data infrastructure and platform to enable partners to offer ISAs. StudentFinance says the capital will help them support more than 500 students by 2020 and to scale ISAs across Europe. The startup positions itself at the intersection of fintech and edtech to address a reported digital talent gap, citing over 700,000 uncovered technology job vacancies in Europe. The founding team includes Mariano Kostelec, Marta Palmeiro, Sergio Pereia and Miguel Santo Amaro, who previously helped build Uniplaces. Financially, StudentFinance has raised an investment round of €1,150,000 to execute these plans.
