Studypool operates an online marketplace that connects students with tutors on a per-question basis. The site has grown to some 22,000 tutors and nearly double that in student users, with about 150,000 questions posted and another 50,000 pieces of study-related content. Studypool generates revenue by keeping a 20% margin on paid question answers and is closing in on a $1 million run rate. Average response time for basic questions is roughly eight minutes, down from 10–11 minutes a few months earlier. Founders Richard Werbe (CEO) and Jiaming Zhong (CTO) began building the service in spring 2014 while college sophomores and later dropped out to move to California to focus on growth. The company plans to use the seed funding to grow its user base, redesign the website, and launch a native mobile application.
