StuffThatWorks operates a crowdsourced platform where people contribute free-text accounts of their experiences with chronic and rare health conditions. Users answer open-ended questions and natural-language algorithms aggregate and structure responses into condition profiles and insights. The platform has nearly 180,000 contributors across about 110 conditions, totaling almost 10 million data points. As datasets grow, the company says its machine learning can rank treatments by effectiveness and eventually predict which treatments might work for individual visitors. StuffThatWorks allows anonymous, opt-in contributions and collaborates with a limited number of researchers, medical organizations, and patient advocacy groups on patient-reported outcome research. It recently raised $9 million in a seed round, its first announced funding, to continue building its data and product.
