Sugarlogix

Berkeley, CA, United States

Overview

Sugarlogix develops HMOs found in human breast milk, focusing initially on the prevalent 2'-fucosyllactose (2'FL). The firm uses engineered baker's yeast rather than E. coli, which it says offers regulatory, marketing and sustainability advantages and that no modified yeast remains in the final product. Sugarlogix's initial commercial target is the infant formula market, while it may later explore HMO applications for adults pending evidence of benefit. Co-founder Chaeyoung Shin has highlighted the selective prebiotic role of HMOs in promoting B.infantis and other beneficial gut bacteria. The company has engaged in active conversations with multiple companies and is receiving many sample requests. To date, Sugarlogix has raised about $2.5M from grants, accelerators and VC investors.
