SummerBio provides affordable, rapid, high-volume COVID-19 testing using a high-sensitivity real-time RT-PCR assay run in its CLIA-certified laboratory. The company created an end-to-end automated testing system that uses robotics, high-throughput liquid handling, an automated identification capture system, and a novel nasal-swab test kit to reduce turnaround time and cost. SummerBio has partnered with UCLA and the Los Angeles Unified School District and has processed more than 130,000 tests to date. In internal studies the SummerBio SARS-CoV-2 Test showed 100% diagnostic sensitivity and 100% diagnostic specificity (with reported confidence intervals). By the end of 2020 the company planned to scale its mega-lab capacity to approximately 100,000 tests per day. SummerBio’s team includes molecular biologists, laboratory scientists, software and automation engineers, and public health and logistics experts drawn from large-scale laboratory and diagnostics backgrounds.
