Overview
Sunglass is a cloud-based CAD collaboration platform that publicly launched after debuting at TechCrunch Disrupt NYC. Its core product is an API and plugin system that integrates directly with major CAD tools such as SolidWorks, SketchUp, Processing, and Rhino to let users upload models from within those apps for instant viewing, annotation, and editing. The platform also integrates with cloud storage providers like Box and Dropbox to simplify adding projects and initiating collaborative sessions. Sunglass delivers HTML5-based browser collaboration and supports over 40 different file formats to reduce sharing barriers. Co-founders Nitin Rao and Kaustuv DeBiswas position the product as a Google Docs–style experience for 3D objects aimed at both expert designers and novices. Financially, the company has raised $1.8 million from General Catalyst, Sherpalo Ventures, and Lerer Ventures. The team intends to follow a GitHub-style monetization approach—keeping price points low initially and determining pricing later based on project size and openness.
