Kitu Life, founded in 2016 by brothers Jimmy, Jake, and Jordan DeCicco, produces Super Coffee — a high-protein, vegan, keto-friendly, zero-sugar ready-to-drink coffee and also sells ground coffee, pods, and creamers. Its products are sold in retailers including Walmart, Walgreens, and Kroger. In August the company raised $106 million in a three-month Series C, bringing total funding to over $150 million. The round was led by Durable Capital Partners and involved Henry Ellenbogen working with the founders to expand the raise beyond an initial $50 million target. Since the fundraise Kitu opened a new headquarters in Austin, Texas and added 30 employees to reach 135 total, with plans to hire up to 60 more over the next two years. The company plans to use the capital to expand distribution to 70% of the U.S. (up from roughly 40%) and pursue a longer-term, five-year growth plan. Kitu Life Inc. operates the Super Coffee brand, a ready-to-drink coffee product line created by three brothers. The company has pursued rapid retail expansion, signing a national distribution deal with Anheuser-Busch InBev covering over 25,000 stores. Founders and new celebrity investors say they plan to use high-profile networks to accelerate global growth and brand building. Super Coffee has grown headcount to about 90 full-time employees and posted steep revenue growth: $200K in 2016, $800K in 2017, $3.5M in 2018, $26M in 2019, and an estimated $70M in 2020. Management frames celebrity investors as active business partners who will coach the company rather than serve only as endorsers.
