Overview
SuperFlex is a spinoff from SRI focused on "powered clothing," also called intelligent wearable strength: textile garments with flexible electric motors embedded to assist standing, walking, and other everyday movements. The system targets wellness and personal independence rather than industrial or exercise use, with an initial emphasis on older adults who are losing confidence in mobility. Early designs aim to boost core strength in the torso, hips, and legs and can both detect actions automatically and allow users to manually ramp up assistance. The company emphasizes apparel design and soft, non‑bulky prototypes, drawing on textile experts and fashion designers rather than traditional robotics aesthetics. SuperFlex is headed by longtime SRI program director Rich Mahoney and initially split off from SRI in April. The team is exploring additional professional and athletic applications while planning a near-term product reveal and aiming for availability in 2018.
