Overview

Supermedium builds a bespoke web-first browser and hub for WebVR, focused on surfacing snackable VR experiences accessible via URLs. The company was founded by Mozilla alums behind the WebVR standard and launched earlier this year after graduating Y Combinator. It is focused on higher-end headsets like the Rift and HTC Vive that support positional tracking and hand controllers, and does not currently support Oculus Go or Gear VR. Supermedium has introduced Supercraft, simple in-browser content-creation tools, and says a large share of usage comes from users navigating VR-optimized adult content. The startup raised $1.1 million in seed funding from a group of investors to keep development moving. The team plans to stay lean, build an early passionate user base, and promote WebVR as standalone hardware with tracked controllers matures.
