SuperNode is a Dublin-based renewable tech startup founded in 2018 by the late Dr. Eddie O’Connor that develops next-generation superconducting cable systems. Its product uses liquid nitrogen to cool cables to cryogenic temperatures, bringing materials into superconductivity to transmit power with zero electrical losses and much higher power density. SuperNode says its cables can be up to five times more powerful than conventional cables at much lower voltage levels while reducing losses, costs, footprint, and infrastructure needs. The company plans commercial availability of its superconducting cables by the end of the decade and has teamed up with CERN to improve its systems. It has announced plans to invest €40 million into research and development and operates development and testing at facilities in Dublin and Blyth. The recent €8 million funding will support prototype testing, demonstration projects, further technology development, and efforts to bring the technology to market to aid decarbonisation and energy independence.
