Supernova
71-75 Shelton Street, Covent Garden, London, WC2H 9JQ, United Kingdom
Overview
Supernova is a photo- and video-focused social app that positions itself as an "ethical alternative" to Instagram and Facebook, with familiar features such as follows, private accounts, groups, messaging and an Explore feed. Its core product redirects advertising revenue: 60% of ad income flows into a "Supernova Action Fund" and is distributed to causes chosen by users across categories like mental health, climate and human rights. Engagement mechanics differ from incumbents — Likes act as votes that increase a poster’s chosen charity share, Superlikes ("Supernovas") are worth 10x and require Karma Points tied to a user charter. The company says it will begin with 100% human moderation staffed by a UK-based team and will augment moderation with machine learning as it scales. Launch partners include sports brand ASICS as a sponsor and MQ Mental Health as the first charity beneficiary. Founder Dominic O’Meara, a former advertising executive, says he is largely bootstrapping the business while planning to scale and pursue institutional funding next year.
