Overview
SuperRare is a digital marketplace that authenticates and certifies digital art using NFTs, launched on the Ethereum mainnet on April 4, 2018. The company was built by three friends working out of a coffee shop in Brooklyn and quickly attracted a passionate community of artists. Artists on SuperRare averaged about $8,000 of sales per month in the first year, and that figure has risen to about $25 million per month; to date artists have earned over $30 million from primary sales and secondary-market royalties, with artists receiving a 10% cut of subsequent sales. The broader crypto art market is cited at over $400 million, and SuperRare says the investment will help it serve significantly more artists and collectors as digital collecting nears mainstream adoption. The company plans to use the funding to expand core features into more scalable and social elements such as chat and personalized feeds, enhance market mechanics and auction functionality, and extend artwork formats into virtual reality. It also intends to push long-term sustainability of artworks and ownership by implementing layer-2 scaling solutions.
