Symbiomix Therapeutics is a Newark, N.J.-based, privately held biopharmaceutical company founded in 2012 focused on treatments for serious women's health infections. Its lead candidate, SYM-1219, contains secnidazole, a next-generation 5-nitroimidazole antibiotic. SYM-1219 has completed a multi-center, randomized Phase 2 trial testing a single oral dose for bacterial vaginosis. Following an End-of-Phase 2 meeting with the FDA, the company plans to submit the Phase 2 trial as one of two pivotal studies toward an NDA filing in 2016. The FDA recently designated SYM-1219 as a Qualified Infectious Disease Product (QIDP). Symbiomix intends to use the financing to advance SYM-1219 through Phase 3 and toward NDA submission.
