Overview
Symbiosis CM is a medical-device startup that has created a platform enabling real-time adjustment of mitral valve prostheses to the unique structure of each patient’s heart. The system is compatible with valves already on the market, allowing clinicians to customize existing implants rather than rely on rigid, one-size-fits-all devices. A functional prototype is currently being tested in pre-clinical laboratory models and is small enough to be used for both human and veterinary applications. The company was co-founded by Dr. Shira Burg, a veterinarian-turned-cardiac electrophysiology researcher, and Varda Badet, a former executive vice president at Bank Leumi who now serves as a business partner and mentor. Symbiosis CM claims its technology could address the 70 % of the 4 million U.S. mitral valve disease patients who lack suitable treatment options and help reduce the nearly $40 billion in annual hospital costs tied to the condition. In addition to product development, the startup has recruited veteran med-tech entrepreneur Amir Weisberg as CEO, bringing 35 years of industry experience, three exits and a NASDAQ IPO to the team. To date, the company has raised $1.9 million through a mix of grants, competition prizes and other funding sources, and it has also secured support from the Israel Innovation Authority.
