SymPhysis Medical
Unit 5 ATU Innovation Hubs, Dublin Road, Galway, H91 DCH9, Ireland
Overview
SymPhysis Medical is building Releaze, a port-style drainage system that combines a safety-valve catheter with a compact external hub, allowing patients and carers to relieve malignant pleural effusion at home instead of enduring repeated hospital procedures. The condition, which causes painful fluid build-up in the chest, affects more than 150,000 people annually in the United States, and Releaze aims to improve comfort and reduce hospital visits for these patients. Headquartered in Galway, the company has worked closely with Irish clinicians, nurses, patients and carers to design and refine the device. With the new U.S. grant, SymPhysis Medical will open its first American base in Rhode Island, advance testing and move toward its initial FDA regulatory clearance. The firm also plans to build partnerships across New England’s life-sciences cluster while continuing to expand engineering and operations in Ireland. To date, the company has raised over €4 million from Irish and European investors and health-innovation programmes, adding to the latest U.S. public-sector funding. These combined resources provide the runway to progress Releaze toward early international commercialisation.
