Overview
Synapse builds a hardware add-on that interfaces with existing x-ray machines and provides a neural-net powered assistant to help detect weapons and sharp objects. The device does not void machine warranties and is designed to augment human screeners rather than replace them. The company is focused on security checkpoints at critical infrastructure sites and is pursuing airport deployments; it is running a pilot at Tokyo’s Narita airport. Synapse reports its scanners have helped find 14% more prohibited items in that pilot and the company has scanned more than 5 million bags to date. The team has been performing lab tests to detect 3D-printed weapons and is expanding the scope of detectable threats. Synapse says it will use recent funding to expand into more critical infrastructure locations and ramp up hiring.
