Sync Computing is a deep tech, cloud infrastructure optimization company spun out of MIT Lincoln Laboratory. It builds a mathematical-optimization-powered Autotuner for Apache Spark that helps developers and data engineers control cloud infrastructure to meet business goals for data and ML workloads. The company launched a public API for its Apache Spark Autotuner, expanding from a self-serve product for Amazon EMR and Databricks on AWS to enable programmatic application across data jobs. The Autotuner supports continuous monitoring and custom alerts through integrations with AWS EMR and Databricks and has been field-tested with enterprise customers including Duolingo (which serves more than 40 million monthly active users), Disney and multiple Fortune 500 companies. Sync plans to use the funds to accelerate growth and expand operations. Founders Jeff Chou and Suraj Bramhavar and prior support include Activate Fellows (Cohort 2020), DARPA’s Microsystems Technology Office and the MIT Startup Exchange Accelerator. Sync Computing, spun out of MIT Lincoln Laboratory by Jeff Chou and Suraj Bramhavar, builds software that mathematically optimizes provisioning and scheduling for distributed cloud workloads. The company harnesses computational physics to automatically configure and optimize cloud resources for data, ML, and scientific workloads, reducing manual tuning. It launched two products as part of its public debut: the Sync Autotuner for Apache Spark (available today) and the Sync Orchestrator (available for preview). Sync reported active pilots with public and private enterprise customers across SaaS, finance, and data sectors and said Duolingo cut daily data job cloud costs in half using the Autotuner. Financially, Sync announced $6.1M in funding and a separate $1M contract award from the Department of Defense for large distributed workload optimization. The company intends to use the new capital to advance its accelerated data infrastructure engine and solution lines and to expand its position in modern data infrastructure. Its team and founders include Activate Fellows and alumni from MIT, UC Berkeley, Harvard, Stanford, IBM, Intel, and Cloudability.
