Sync.ME (formerly Smartsync) is a social contact synchronization app for the iPhone that updates contacts with photos, birthdays and Facebook statuses. The app displays callers' latest Facebook photos or statuses on the incoming-call screen and keeps contact photos and details in sync as friends change numbers, addresses and emails. The company says it has 5 million users and is syncing over one billion contacts worldwide each week. Sync.ME has seen particular traction in Japan after adding a Japanese-language supported search algorithm. CEO and co-founder Shlomo Unger says the new funding will be used to scale up the service and to fund development of new features. The product emphasis is on keeping users' address books current and socially contextualized via Facebook data.
