SynCardia makes the Total Artificial Heart, a temporary device that replaces both failing ventricles and the four heart valves. Following surgery and recovery, medically stable patients use the portable Freedom driver to power the SynCardia Heart; the Freedom driver is CE‑approved in Europe, completed U.S. clinical trials under an FDA IDE study, and the company is awaiting FDA market approval. The FDA granted Humanitarian Use Device (HUD) designation for the 70cc Total Artificial Heart for destination therapy, and SynCardia is pursuing a Humanitarian Device Exemption (HDE) that, if approved, would allow up to 4,000 transplant‑ineligible patients annually to receive the device. The company is developing a smaller 50cc version of its temporary Total Artificial Heart and raised $14 million to support that effort. Operationally, SynCardia reports tripled sales, has hired 40 people, and spent more than $2.5 million on Tucson facility expansion and new equipment over the last three years. As of Dec. 16, the company recorded 155 SynCardia Total Artificial Heart implants in 2013, nearly double its 2011 record of 81. Recent financing activity includes contributions from SWK Holdings and Athyrium Capital Management and the company raised $19 million earlier in the year.
