TagDat is a local reviews app that lets users rate places with predetermined emoji-like tags (for example, “spicy” or “authentic”) rather than text. The interface is bright and playful and reflects the founders' minimalist UI/UX design approach. To populate listings the app combines external sources like Google Places with data from alpha and beta testers. Because tags are easier to parse than free text, the team plans to analyze user descriptions and sell detailed analyses to listed businesses rather than relying on advertising. The app is currently in beta on the App Store and the team is already working on its next set of features. Founders include Buffy Li (an 11th grader in Santa Cruz), Wilson Li, and Zheng Cai, and the company has raised $280,000 in pre-seed funding and plans to seek roughly $4 million in a seed round.
