Taimba operates a mobile-based platform that links rural small-scale farmers and farmer cooperatives to urban buyers, removing middlemen, shrinking the value chain and reducing wastage. The startup works with about 2,000 farmers and 15 farmer savings and credit co-operatives that sell produce such as potatoes, tomatoes, cabbages and carrots. Its customer base is roughly 310 buyers—about 85% informal green grocers, 10% restaurants and cafes, and 5% schools and hospitals outside Nairobi. Taimba employs seven permanent staff and five part-time workers. The company plans to strengthen warehouse infrastructure by adding cold storage and improving delivery logistics to serve six additional Nairobi markets and to pilot in Mombasa and Kisumu next year. It also intends to expand its product catalogue to include fruits, nuts and eggs and to enhance technology for end-to-end traceability across the value chain. Over the next five years Taimba aims to replicate its model in Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia and Rwanda.
