TiKL operates two mobile communications apps — TiKL Touch To Talk (a cross-platform walkie-talkie) and Talkray (a broader communications app) — and has opened its Talkray API to developers. The Talkray API enables one-to-one and group text chats, group voice calling (up to 25 participants), voicemail, and image and video transfers for iOS and Android apps. TiKL expects strong demand from game developers but has kept the API generic to serve any app; the API is free during an initial private beta and pricing is not yet finalized. The company reports 28 million total downloads across its apps (27 million for TiKL Walkie-Talkie, mostly in the U.S. and South Korea; about 1 million for Talkray, popular in the Middle East) and says it reached those numbers with $0 spent on marketing. TiKL declined to disclose active-user counts. The company participated in Y Combinator’s Winter 2012 class.
