Overview
Tangled provides an open, extensible network where developers can self-host repositories on lightweight servers called “Knots” that seamlessly federate into the broader platform. Built on the AT Protocol, Tangled supports stacked pull requests and agent-driven workflows, aiming to serve indie developers, open-source communities, and the emerging era of AI coding agents. The community-first product already counts roughly 900 Discord members and 18,000 Bluesky followers who help shape feature development. While the service is currently free and unmonetised, the founders plan to follow a Tailscale-style model in which individual and open-source users remain free while businesses pay for advanced capabilities. Tangled’s emphasis on data sovereignty and European jurisdiction seeks to address concerns over Microsoft’s ownership of GitHub and its AI training practices. The company was founded by brothers Akshay and Anirudh Oppiliappan, who previously built large-scale distributed systems at Y Combinator startups, operating from London and Helsinki respectively. The recent capital raise positions Tangled to scale its infrastructure and broaden its community footprint.
