Tanium

3550 Carillon Point, Kirkland, WA, 98033, United States

Overview

Tanium offers a unified endpoint management and security platform that unifies operational visibility, security controls, and risk management for large organizations. The platform is used by nearly half of the Fortune 100, top retailers and financial institutions, and six branches of the US Armed Forces. In July the company announced Tanium as a Service, described as the first and only zero infrastructure endpoint management and security solution, and in August it announced a major partnership with Google Cloud and integration with Chronicle. In June Tanium announced a strategic partnership with Salesforce and an investment from Salesforce Ventures. The company reported 2019 revenue grew over 50% year over year, exceeding $430 million, with double-digit adjusted EBITDA and operating cash flow margins, and grew headcount to more than 1,400 full-time employees. Recent financing activity has further increased the company’s market momentum and valuation. Tanium is an Emeryville, Calif.-based provider of unified endpoint management and security built for demanding IT environments. Its platform gives IT teams comprehensive visibility and control of endpoints, enabling reliable asset management, proactive incident remediation, and real-time decision making using accurate endpoint data. The company says its platform improves productivity for employees and help-desk engineers and is used by many of the world’s largest organizations, including more than half of the Fortune 100, top retailers and financial institutions, and four branches of the US Armed Forces. Tanium intends to use the new funding to accelerate its strategic partnership with Salesforce and to strengthen its market leadership in unified endpoint management and security. Through the partnership, Salesforce will leverage the Tanium platform alongside its development platform, workflow capabilities, and third-party ecosystem to support employee service management for an increasingly remote-working world. Tanium offers an enterprise platform that spans compliance and operational security, providing IT security and management at scale across large organizations. The company builds services in-house and positions itself as a platform rather than a single-purpose security tool, and it has not made any acquisitions to date. Tanium reported being profitable (announced end of 2017) and cash-flow positive; in 2018 (fiscal year end 2017) it held $320 million in cash and equivalents and had positive operating cash flow of $25 million. Billings grew to more than $270 million, ARR was approximately $230 million (up over 80% year-over-year), and net renewal rates exceeded 150%. The company has grown to over 800 employees and counts hundreds of the world’s largest enterprises, including over half of the Fortune 100, as customers. Management says future growth will continue to emphasize organic product development and platform expansion rather than acquisitions. Tanium provides endpoint protection services used to secure a wide range of computer devices. Its customers include 12 of the top 15 U.S. banks, six of the top 10 retailers and the U.S. military. CEO and co‑founder Orion Hindawi said the company generated "well over $200 million in revenue" in the last year. The company has faced recent challenges, including reports of misusing some customer data for sales demonstrations and several employees leaving the firm citing management issues. Tanium has been discussed as potentially IPO‑ready in the past, but its leadership has not set a public offering timeline. The company continues to attract private investment amid a broader market shift driven by cheaper computing, big data and machine learning. Tanium builds an endpoint-security platform that continuously scans all endpoints to detect vulnerabilities and unmanaged devices. The company reports revenue growth of 100% year over year and 150% net renewals, saying customers expand spend as new features are added monthly. Management says it has $300 million in cash and investor capital on hand and has raised $407 million in total to date. Leadership framed the recent transaction as optional liquidity rather than capital need and says the company aims to go public on its own timeline. Founded and led by Orion Hindawi with his father David Hindawi as executive chairman, Tanium is a 10-year-old Emeryville, California–based company employing about 550 people. The company has acknowledged recent senior departures and public scrutiny, which management attributes to growing pains and a hard-nosed culture.
