Overview
Tapingo, led by founder and CEO Daniel Almog, is a San Francisco-based mobile shopping platform that supplies merchant partners with mobile-ordering technology. The company uses machine learning to infer user preferences from everyday behavior and match those preferences with nearby options. Since launching in the college market in 2014, Tapingo has grown from around two dozen campuses to more than 85 across the U.S. and processes over 25,000 transactions per day. Earlier in the year it expanded its services to include delivery and general campus retail. Tapingo will use the new funds to accelerate expansion beyond the college market, hire new staff, and invest in product development, operations, and marketing. Tapingo builds mobile apps (iOS, Android and Facebook) that let college students order food from on-campus or nearby restaurants, integrating university-issued or private payment cards for one-tap purchases. The app tailors restaurant listings and deals to each campus, retains order history, supports pickup without waiting, and arranges delivery when offered. Tapingo describes its approach as “contextual shopping” and is targeting other dense enterprise ecosystems; the team is testing expansion into campus-style environments such as dense cities, airports, malls, and stadiums. Commissions on the service begin at 10% for participating restaurants, with rates likely to decline as deployments scale. In the 25 universities where it has been deployed, Tapingo says it accounts for about 40% of all transactions and reports 50% of undergraduates making purchases four to five times per week. The company will use the new funding to build out its network to more campuses. Tapingo provides a mobile commerce platform enabling students to order and pay for food and goods at merchants on and around college campuses. Led by CEO Daniel Almog, the platform offers a real-time view of merchant inventories and multiple payment options, including credit cards, PayPal, and campus cards. The service is commercially available on a number of U.S. college campuses and the company plans to expand significantly in the fall of 2012. Tapingo is headquartered in San Francisco and maintains an R&D center in Tel Aviv, Israel. In July 2012 the company raised $3.5M in its first financing round from Carmel Ventures, with Carmel partner Shlomo Dovrat joining the board. Tapingo intends to use the funding to accelerate sales and marketing efforts throughout the United States.
