Overview

Tapjoy operates a technology platform that allows developers to discover, distribute and monetize mobile applications and enables advertisers to reach and gain exposure to large audiences. The company’s network spans over 9,000 applications and 200 million global consumers across iOS, Android and emerging mobile platforms. Led by president and CEO Mihir Shah, Tapjoy is based in San Francisco and also has offices in New York, London and Tokyo. The company plans to use the funds to accelerate its product technology roadmap, expand direct advertiser relationships, broaden its services and pursue new opportunities. The article does not disclose revenue figures or other financial metrics beyond the fundraising. Tapjoy provides a cross-platform distribution and monetization platform for mobile and social apps, offering virtual currency, analytics and other monetization tools for iPhone, Android and Facebook apps. The company says more than 5,000 app developers and advertisers use Tapjoy, including GameDuell, Tapulous, glu, Pinger, Playdom, Kayak, Barnes & Noble, MTV, Bing, Fandango, Groupon and Intuit. After rebranding from Offerpal (and following the Scamville controversy and Facebook-driven layoffs), Tapjoy shifted strategy toward broader distribution with its Social K-Factor product, which aims to reach roughly 1 billion users across 150+ countries via social networks and media platforms. Tapjoy plans to invest the new funding into its services platform for app developers, cross-platform infrastructure, application media licensing and incubation opportunities. The company reported that Q4 2010 was its best quarter in terms of revenue, profits and margins. While still operating in the offers business, Tapjoy says its direction is broader than its legacy Offerpal business.
