temi builds an AI-powered, voice-controlled wheeled personal robot with a tablet-like display, a small shelf, and the ability to follow owners, make video calls, play media, and control smart home devices. The company’s voice assistant was developed specifically for the robot and the device can run many Android apps via a companion smartphone app. temi’s robot is sold on Amazon and in some retail stores in the U.S. and Asia and is listed at about $2,000. The firm has seen demand in offices, stores, and healthcare settings where robots are used for communication, delivering medicine, and checking patients—applications that grew during the coronavirus outbreak. temi spun out of Maryland-based Roboteam in 2016 and maintains headquarters in New York City, an R&D lab in Tel Aviv, and business and manufacturing operations in Shenzhen, China. With the new funding the company plans to boost marketing and sales after beginning to sell the robot a little over a year ago; the round also increases the company’s total capital raised to roughly $36 million.
