Overview

Tempered Networks develops an identity-defined networking platform that implements zero-trust principles by granting connections based on a whitelist of trusted entities. The company emphasizes a simple point-and-click interface for creating and managing secure networks. Its customers include oil drillers, electrical substations, hospitals and smart buildings. Tempered has partnered with Delta Control to build secure systems for smart buildings and is working to improve its platform to accommodate growth in internet-of-things devices. The startup confirmed it will invest new funding into engineering, sales resources, and partnerships. Tempered was founded in 2014 by Jeff Hussey, who previously helped launch F5 Networks, and employs about 55 people in Seattle. Tempered Networks provides an Identity-Defined Networking (IDN) platform that unifies networking and security by assigning each connected resource a unique crypto identity rather than relying on IP addresses. Its platform enables orchestration, cloaking, encryption, and instant provisioning, movement, or revocation of IP resources. The company says this approach makes networks adaptable, secure, and simple to manage. Led by President and CEO Jeff Hussey and based in Seattle, WA, Tempered raised $10M in a Series B that brought total funding to approximately $32M. The company intends to use the funds to create product differentiation, hire talent, and broaden global sales and distribution channels. Dennis Weibling of Rally Capital joined the board as part of the transaction. Tempered Networks builds a virtual private overlay network architecture that orchestrates identity and trust management for critical infrastructure, ICS, and IIoT devices. Its platform enables organizations to cloak critical infrastructure devices while communicating over secure channels. The company serves customers in manufacturing, oil & gas, and utilities. Led by co‑founder, president and CEO Jeff Hussey, Tempered Networks is based in Seattle, WA. It has raised $22m to date and just closed a $15m Series A. The company intends to use the funds to build sales, marketing, and engineering teams and to expand its distribution channels. Tempered Networks builds secure connectivity solutions for critical infrastructure, industrial control systems (ICS), and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) using a Virtual Private Overlay Network architecture. Its technology orchestrates identity and trust management to cloak critical infrastructure devices while enabling secure encrypted communications over both trusted and untrusted networks. The company offers a HIPswitch product line designed to match the fit, form, and function of target applications and to bridge IT and OT imperatives with centralized governance and oversight. Key industries the solution targets include public utilities (power, water and gas), oil & gas, and manufacturing. In 2014 Tempered Networks completed a $5 million bridge round and earlier raised $2 million in seed funding. The company expanded its board with Erik Swan, co-founder of Splunk, and plans to incorporate enterprise and industrial log/machine-data expertise into its product offerings. Tempered Networks builds security technology that shields industrial control systems and industrial IoT devices, effectively ‘cloaking’ critical infrastructure from attacks when installed inline between sites and data centers. The company’s product targets electricity, water systems (including reservoir pumps), and oil & gas control equipment, and the offering starts at $9,995. Tempered was originally started in 2012 with technology from Boeing; founder David Mattes, a former Boeing research engineer, remains CTO. The company has a 15-person staff, more than half of whom previously worked at F5, and it reports 15 customers across manufacturing, oil & gas and utilities. Jeff Hussey, co-founder and former CEO of F5 Networks, has taken the CEO role and says he intends to scale the business rapidly. The startup recently announced $2 million in funding to support its growth plans.
