Overview

Tepha Inc. develops and commercializes medical devices based on its proprietary polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) biomaterial technology. Its biosynthetically produced PHAs are described as offering superior flexibility, elasticity and biocompatibility, and fiber-based products with excellent tensile strength and strength retention. TephaFLEX polymer is the first of the company's PHA materials to be used in FDA-cleared medical devices. Products made from TephaFLEX include surgical suture, surgical mesh, surgical film and a composite mesh. The company is developing more complex devices that could include anterior cruciate ligament repair solutions, intracardiac defect closure devices, and absorbable cardiovascular stents. Tepha recently raised $11.3M in equity from 38 investors, according to SEC filings. Tepha develops medical devices derived from resorbable polymers that the company says are engineered via recombinant DNA technology. Its product portfolio includes the TephaFLEX® Absorbable Suture, which received FDA 510(k) clearance in February 2007. The company and its partners have recently received five additional 510(k) clearances covering sutures, meshes, and films. Tepha has secured a $3.2M credit facility to provide working capital. The financing is intended to support the company as it expands global commercialization efforts. No revenue or user metrics are reported in the article.
