Overview
Boston-based Teradar is developing a solid-state "modular terahertz engine" that operates in the terahertz band of the electromagnetic spectrum, offering long-range, high-resolution sensing without moving parts. The sensor is designed to cut through rain, fog and glare while delivering detail comparable to lidar, all at a projected price of only a few hundred dollars—between typical radar and lidar costs. Teradar is already collaborating with five major U.S. and European automakers to validate the technology and aims to secure a production contract for a 2028-model vehicle, necessitating readiness by 2027. The company is also working with three Tier-1 suppliers to scale manufacturing. While defense and industrial use cases exist, management says the near-term focus remains automotive ADAS and self-driving applications. Teradar was founded in 2021 by Matt Carey, Gregory Charvat and terahertz-chip expert Nick Saiz, and its seed round was led by MIT’s The Engine. Including the new Series B, the startup has raised at least $150 million to date.
