Overview
Terrascope develops Fatmap, a detailed 3D mapping engine that powers a consumer-facing ski app and terrain intelligence toolkit. The engine uses high-resolution, tri-stereoscopic satellite imagery to produce 3D models with an elevation grid resolution of 2m, delivering between 15x and 45x more detail than Google Earth and usable offline. Fatmap includes terrain tools such as 3D fly-through sharing, sunny-slope detection, detailed on- and off-piste route descriptions, and real-time location sharing. The company plans to launch a subscription-based Fatmap Ski product for ski resorts in December and is discussing licensing the 3D mapping engine for other applications and industries. Terrascope says it initially will cover Chamonix, Verbier, Zermatt, Val d'Isere & Tignes (Espace Killy) and Les Arcs & La Plagne (Paradiski), with additional resorts rolling out through the winter season. In mapping and terrain intelligence it may compete with MemoryMap and ViewRanger, and in ski tracking with Strava, MapMyRide and Ski Tracks, though the team says there is little direct competition for off-piste ski mapping.
