Overview
Terraton’s core product is a repeatable biochar project-development system intended to let local partners build and operate biochar facilities using a franchised model. The company combines on-the-ground project development with a SaaS component to run plants, measure and verify carbon credits, and sell those credits to large buyers. Terraton argues that most biochar facilities have only been built once, and its approach is to learn from initial projects and clone the operations for new partners. The company has developed two facilities in Africa (Ghana and Kenya), both owned by local businesses that source agricultural waste from nearby producers. Together those two facilities are expected to remove about 20,000 metric tons of CO2 annually, and Terraton estimates a single facility can capture roughly 10,000 metric tons per year. The team is targeting the supply-constrained biochar market and aims to scale by enabling partners to replicate proven facilities and tap large corporate buyers seeking credits.
