Tethered Drone Systems builds unmanned multicopters that are powered via a tether to enable near-continuous flight for aerial surveillance and broadcasting. Its tethered design extends on-station time compared with battery-powered drones and the vehicles have a flight capability to 300m (1,000 ft). Engineers are working on autonomous takeoff and landing to remove the need for a pilot. The company says pilotless tethered drones have applications across security, precision agriculture, telecommunications and emergency services. TDS is currently the only UK-based tethered drone in commercial development and is working to complete a fully commercial product. It has begun securing funding to finish development and build its order book, and is open to public investment via Britbots CROWD.
