The Shed operates a brokered rental marketplace that takes delivery of manufacturers’ products and rents them in local markets without owning inventory. The company launched in April and is headquartered in Richmond, Va., and has expanded operations to Denver with planned moves into Portland, Austin and San Jose. It works across eight product categories and counts Stanley Black & Decker as a marquee partner, with others including Primus, Mobility Plus and Replacements. Manufacturers provide products and a servicing starter kit so The Shed and its employees can manage and maintain items. The company reports 60 manufacturers on board and about 15–18 vendors signing up monthly as it scales. The Shed plans to roll out dynamic pricing to optimize revenue when items are in high demand.
