The Supplant Company
210 Cambridge Science Park, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, CB4 0WA, United Kingdom
Overview
The Supplant Company converts fibrous agricultural waste (corn cobs, wheat straw, oat husks, paper pulp) into a blended ingredient it calls ‘sugars from fiber’ using enzyme-driven breakdown of polysaccharides. The ingredient is formulated to mimic sucrose functionality (browning, caramelization) while delivering about one-third the sweetness and roughly half the calories of table sugar (1.8 calories/gram). Nutritionally, 10g provides 18 calories, 10g carbs, 1.5g fiber and 4.5g sugars for labeling; the company reports a low glycemic response (<15% of glucose) and potential prebiotic effects in the large intestine. Supplant has filed a suite of patents and says the composition of the ingredient is its strongest IP asset. The firm has sample partnerships with multiple manufacturers and is pursuing a dual go-to-market approach as a B2B branded ingredient supplier and potentially a CPG brand, working with co-manufacturers for production. It plans to scale initially in the U.S., has compiled a GRAS determination it intends to send to the FDA, and has been in discussions with regulators and consultants about labeling and nutrition-panel treatment of its ingredient.
