Overview
Founded in 2016 by Liam O’Neill, John O’Donoghue and Pat Burt, Theradep uses a proprietary plasma-spray process to deposit ultra-thin layers of biologics, pharmaceuticals or mixed materials onto the surface of medical devices, making implants more bio-compatible and higher-performing once inside the body. Operating out of Clonmel, Ireland and Palo Alto, California, the company collaborates with customers ranging from early-stage medtech startups to large multinationals. Having originally focused on contract coating services, Theradep is now expanding into its own product portfolio, including live-cell analysis tools for pharma and biopharma research. The firm plans to launch its first branded product next month and is installing multiple proprietary coating systems to support commercial scale-up. To date, Theradep has raised approximately €10 million, benefitting from feasibility grants and networking support from Enterprise Ireland. Over the next year the team intends to scale commercialization, build out a centre of excellence and additional production facilities, and broaden its range of bio-coated materials for cell-based research. These initiatives are timed to coincide with the closing of a new €10 million funding round expected before year-end.
