ThisWeekIn is a live Web TV network that produces and distributes live-streamed shows covering technology, business and entertainment, featuring guest experts, founders, movie stars, comedians, technologists and CEOs. Launched in May 2010 by Jason Calacanis, Kevin Pollak and Mark Jeffrey, the company is based in Santa Monica, CA. It distributes content across a branded YouTube channel, iTunes and iPad storefronts, a Boxee application and Google TV. In partnership with Ustream, its website embeds a live chat and video stream to enable viewers to engage in real time around shows. The company received a venture capital investment from media pioneer Jarl Mohn, who joined the board of directors. Mohn commented that targeted original Web programming and Social TV represent a strong business model and said he is excited to support what ThisWeekIn is building. This Week In is a live streaming video network producing multiple topic-focused weekly shows, including This Week In Startups, This Week In iPad, and The Kevin Pollak Chat Show. The network streams live via Ustream.TV and distributes episodes as video podcasts on iTunes, monetizing with sponsor-read commercials. At the time of the investment it operated eight shows and reported 450,000 downloads or streams per week, with three shows topping 100,000 each. Founder Jason Calacanis—who previously founded Weblogs Inc and is CEO of Mahalo—led the effort and tapped Mahalo CTO Mark Jeffrey to be CEO of This Week In. Calacanis and two partners invested $300,000 into the project. The company plans to launch another 30 shows over the next two years and is positioning itself to capitalize on broader broadband adoption and new devices like the iPad.
