Tickengo
95 3rd Street, 2nd Floor, San Francisco, 94103
Overview
Tickengo operates an open, peer-to-peer ride-sharing marketplace that lets users sign up and accept rides at their convenience rather than running managed fleets. Incorporated in 2011, the platform positions itself closer to Airbnb than to cab-like services such as Lyft or SideCar. Passengers set their own prices (Tickengo provides a suggested fare), the first driver to accept gets the offered amount, and Tickengo takes a 15% service fee; rides can be priced at about half a normal taxi fare. The company intentionally does not perform background checks or tightly manage drivers, aiming to preserve a pure marketplace model and avoid heightened regulatory scrutiny, according to CEO Geoff Mathieux. Usage appears uneven: Tickengo claims more than 350 drivers in San Francisco but only 22 have given rides, 18 are verified, and just five appear in both categories, suggesting many signups are inactive. The service is therefore presented as better suited for pre-planned trips, and the company had five employees and former San Francisco mayor Willie Brown Jr. as its lawyer and an advisor.
