Overview
Tide Foundation builds a blockchain-based encryption protocol the company says is a “first-of-its-kind” true zero-trust authentication method that encrypts sensitive records with a unique key per record controlled by a decentralized guardian. Keys are split across a group of nodes so no single node has access to a whole key, which the founders argue makes large-scale breaches virtually impossible. The protocol supports familiar user interactions (username/password) and can support biometric authentication, aiming to balance strong security with usability. Tide grew out of the founders’ prior marketing platform, Ziva, after encountering privacy challenges collecting sensitive consumer data for enterprise campaigns. The five-person, five-year-old startup is Sydney-based and says demand has increased from academia, healthcare, law practices and critical infrastructure since the pandemic. Financially, Tide has raised the equivalent of $2 million to date, primarily from angel investors, and the company is focused on getting the product to market.
