Tigera builds a Kubernetes security and compliance platform that implements a zero-trust model to authorize services, encrypt traffic, enforce admin policies and log detailed data for incident management and forensics. Its product is adopted by major public cloud providers and large Kubernetes distros, and it serves enterprises in healthcare, financial services and unnamed SaaS customers. Tigera says all four major public cloud players and distros like Red Hat and Docker use its technology. The company raised a $30 million Series B but noted it did not strictly need the capital and had significant inbound interest. Planned uses of the funding include expanding engineering, marketing and customer success and quadrupling the sales force. Tigera also plans to open a large office in Vancouver, Canada to access talent. Tigera is a San Francisco-based company that helps businesses connect and secure container-based, cloud-native applications. Its CNX platform combines a service mesh based on the Istio project with management, security and networking components based on Project Calico to focus on securing applications rather than just infrastructure. The company takes a Zero Trust approach to application connectivity and operates an open-core model that pairs open-source tools with closed-source enterprise features. All of the large cloud providers — AWS, Microsoft, Google and IBM — have integrated Tigera’s open-source tools as the network policy provider for their managed Kubernetes engines. Tigera said its undisclosed customers include two of the largest SaaS companies, two large financial services companies and a large automotive company. The company raised an additional $10 million in this round and plans to use the funding to invest in product management, expand customer engagement, and build an enterprise marketing organization; with this raise it has now brought total funding to $23 million. Tigera provides integrated, secure, policy-driven cloud-native networking solutions that integrate with Kubernetes, Tectonic, DC/OS, Apache Mesos, Docker Swarm, Apache Brooklyn and OpenStack. Its core offerings center on Calico, a policy-driven networking solution for cloud environments, and Canal, a joint initiative with CoreOS that integrates Calico's policy capabilities with Flannel networking. Led by CEO Andy Randall, the company targets enterprises seeking secure application and workload delivery across private, public and hybrid clouds. Tigera closed a $13m Series A to support growth. The company intends to use the funds to expand engineering capacity and to foster the community around Calico and Canal. Board additions following the round include Ron Bernal and Aaron Jacobson of NEA and Peter Wagner of Wing Venture Capital.
