Tilt

660 York St Ste 102, San Francisco, CA, 94110, United States

Overview

Tilt operates a mobile-first crowdfunding product that lets people raise money for events and causes, with campaigns required to hit a funding threshold before commitments are charged. The company raised around $30 million in its most recent round at a reported $400 million valuation earlier this year. That round brings Tilt’s total disclosed funding to about $67 million, following a $23 million round in December 2013. Andreessen Horowitz has participated in many of the company’s past financings, and earlier investors include SV Angel, Alexis Ohanian and Matt Mullenweg. Tilt says the recent financing involved strong outside interest with minimal dilution. Management plans to deploy capital toward international expansion — growing in Canada (where it launched last year), soft-launches in additional countries, and a launch in the United Kingdom. Tilt also expects to have more than 1,000 college ambassadors by the end of August and to hire region-specific staff to support expansion. Crowdtilt offers a straightforward crowdfunding service with a mobile app, a developer API, and a white-labeled enterprise product called Crowdhoster. The company targets everyday users and smaller, community-focused campaigns rather than large creative or hardware projects. Crowdhoster, built on the Crowdtilt API and described as the "WordPress of crowdfunding," lets businesses fully customize campaigns; in its first 2.5 months it ran 100 campaigns raising over $3 million, including Soylent's $1.81 million sale. Crowdtilt generates revenue by charging fees on campaigns (1% via the API, 2.5% elsewhere) and plans to add paid professional services such as payment support, fraud protection, analytics, and customer reporting. Operational metrics cited include an average successful campaign raise of $1,320, an average campaign achieving 192% of its target, and the company has run over 100,000 campaigns across its products. Going forward, Crowdtilt plans international expansion and has added hires to support that push, including Brian Birtwistle and Bryan Byrne. Crowdtilt runs a social group-fundraising platform aimed at ad-hoc campaigns that don't fit traditional crowdfunding sites. After graduating from Y Combinator, the startup launched in February of last year and has since opened to non-profits and launched an API for developers. The company also released a desktop product, CrowdHoster, to let anyone launch a custom crowdfunding site without code. Crowdtilt says users raised $1 million across campaigns in its first three months, with the average campaign raising 188% of its goal. Mobile is cited as the biggest missing piece, and the company is pursuing an acquisition to bring mobile functionality such as bill splitting, gift purchasing/sharing and event-planning features to the platform. Crowdtilt is a generalist group-funding platform that helps groups collaborate around money for events, causes and shared expenses. The product includes a built-in social network to make campaigns easily shareable and to encourage participants to advocate for campaigns. The company added support for tax-deductible donations to registered 501(c)(3) organizations, automatically issuing tax receipts and allowing users to search a roster of nonprofits. For campaigns that "tilt" (reach their target), Crowdtilt releases funds to nonprofits within a day with no additional fee; nonprofits and other users pay a 2.5% transaction fee. Donors cover their own processing fees, and the company says campaigns typically raise 188% of their goal and that users raised $1 million across campaigns in the first three months. Crowdtilt invested roughly 11 weeks and almost $30,000 to meet compliance to enable tax-deductible donations.
