Tinkercad offers a browser-based CAD tool designed to introduce 3D-printing CAD to a wide audience. The product is free and aims to let users create print-ready projects in minutes using only a web browser. It uses game-like quests to teach what the company calls “design literacy,” helping users design jewelry, toys, car parts and other items. Users are encouraged to share designs under a Creative Commons license and can order prints from services like Shapeways and i.Materialise or download STL files for other services or personal printers such as MakerBot’s Thing-O-Matic. The company has raised $1 million in seed funding from a group of investors, and CEO/co-founder Kai Backman emphasizes lowering the barrier of entry so users can create and print a wide variety of items.
