Overview
Tiny Speck was founded by former Flickr co-founder Stewart Butterfield along with Cal Henderson, Eric Costello, and Serguei Mourachov to create Glitch, an online world designed as an "infinite game" with no fixed endpoint. Glitch emphasizes real-time collaboration among thousands of players, offering hundreds of items and skills that can be freely recombined, and prides itself on whimsical, hand-crafted art direction. Unlike many social games that monetize through micro-transactions for advantage, Tiny Speck intends to rely on a subscription model, though that payment system had not yet been activated at launch. The game opened to the public at 10 a.m. PST with 27,000 existing users and "hundreds of thousands" of additional access requests. Butterfield positions the experience as more authentic and open-ended than titles from major social-gaming competitors like Zynga. The company’s creativity is supported by $10.7 million in Series B financing, allowing it to focus on depth and community rather than purely on monetization tactics. Tiny Speck is now scaling its infrastructure to meet anticipated post-launch demand while refining its subscription strategy.
