TinyOwl builds food-ordering software and operates an on-demand food delivery service platform. The two-year-old, Mumbai-based company has five cofounders and competes in a crowded Indian food‑tech market. Recent funding came with conditions to cut burn, prompting a restructuring that includes moving order processing to a third-party app and shutting operations in four cities. The company has carried out multiple layoffs, including a reported second round affecting 112 sales employees after an earlier cut of about 100. TinyOwl announced $7.67M in fresh funding from earlier backers Matrix Partners and Sequoia Capital, and has raised roughly $27M to date. The restructuring and unsettled employee payments have led to a public incident in Pune where a cofounder was briefly detained by disgruntled former employees. TinyOwl operates a mobile-first food ordering service launched in March 2014 and currently available only in Mumbai. Customers place takeout orders through its iOS and Android apps; the company is not yet profitable. Management is targeting rapid geographic expansion—to more than 50 Indian cities before the end of the year—and a major uptick in volume, aiming for 50,000 daily orders (up from its current 3,000–5,000). The company plans to begin charging restaurants a 10–20% commission per order this year as part of its monetization strategy. Competition in India’s food-ordering market has intensified, with entrants such as Rocket Internet–backed FoodPanda (via acquisitions) and Zomato preparing or expanding order services. TinyOwl says it will focus on product and customer experience while expanding quickly to capture market share.
