Overview

Founded in 2014 by Peter Holm and Simon Hjaere, Tonsser operates a mobile app and community that captures player data, video and scouting information to help youth footballers progress. The company runs a Tonsser United programme with selection events where players wear devices to collect accelerometer and performance data; it currently tracks about 50 data points per player with plans to expand to 80. Tonsser charges a membership fee (€3 per month) for enhanced visibility and tools, and sells club access to a player watch list as a commercial channel. The app reports about 1.3 million users, mostly aged 14–17, with France the largest market (750,000 users) and around 100,000 users in England pre-pandemic. Tonsser cites success stories such as Erling Haaland and Jesper Lindstrøm and lists several players who progressed to professional clubs. The company positions itself as a technology-driven solution to the inefficiencies of traditional youth scouting. Tonsser is a Copenhagen-based startup offering a football performance app for youth players to create profiles, upload match photos and videos, add match and team stats, and follow clubs and peers. At the core is a dynamic Tonsser algorithm that computes a rating for each player based on individual performance, team performance and teammate votes, which feeds leaderboards, awards, scout reports and pro trials. The app is free for players and coaches while scouts pay for special access; Premier League clubs like Huddersfield are reportedly using Tonsser to identify talent. Tonsser is live in eight European countries, including France, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Norway, and has more than 800,000 registered players; 86 percent of French youth teams aged 15–19 reportedly use the app. Planned product enhancements for 2019 include automated video recording using computer vision, integrations with wearables to track physical performance, and a rollout to England in spring 2019 followed by a global expansion including the U.S. The company says it will use new investment to support growth and maintain its position as the leading community for youth players. Tonsser operates a vertical social app for youth soccer players that lets users create profiles, track scores and stats, and publish user-generated video content such as skill tutorials. The platform has grown to 380,000 registered youth players (up from 100,000 a year earlier) and is live in France, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Norway. Tonsser is collaborating with Nike, which has its own brand channel on the platform, and the company is opening up to top clubs to share academy drills and practice content. The startup is working on wearable integrations to surface physical data like pace, acceleration and distance covered. Management says the Nike channel points toward a revenue model for the free-to-access app. Tonsser is gearing up for a 2018 expansion to the U.K. as part of its growth plans and aims to become the de facto platform for the next generation of football. Tonsser is a Copenhagen, Denmark–based social football platform for youth players that enables aspiring footballers to showcase and track their achievements. The Android and iPhone app lets players keep track of their football career, prepare for upcoming matches, win weekly awards and get discovered by scouts. The app has been downloaded by over 100k users in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Spain, Italy and France. Tonsser was founded by Peter Holm, Simon Hjære, Jeppe Curth and Jonas Spott Christensen. The company raised €1.8M in venture capital and intends to use the funds to expand operations globally, firstly in Germany and the UK, and is hiring for various roles to support that growth.
