forfone is a mobile VoIP service founded by Michael Schöpfer and based in Germany and Austria. The app is available in German on Android and iPhone, with support for other mobile OSes planned. Calls and texts between forfone users are free; the service also provides up to 100 minutes per month of free calls to German landlines. SMS can be sent to any phone worldwide at a flat rate of €0.09 per message. The app uses the user’s existing mobile number for calls and texts so caller ID shows their regular number. Schöpfer, previously founder of VoIP company toolani, is managing director and the company said it will announce a partnership with a German publishing group later this month. The company is seed funded with €500,000 from angel investors.
